This tranquil area supports a wide range of trees and shrubs protected by a canopy of mature Scot’s pines.
Paths meander past cascades and pools. The natural charm of a woodland garden has been enhanced with open glades. Notable plants include Camellia ‘C.F. Coates’, known as the fishtail camellia due to its forked leaf tips, Rhododendron falconeri, and a fine specimen of the late-flowering Rhododendron ‘Polar Bear’. On the terraces, you’ll find choice “woodlanders,” including Podophyllum hexandrum, Impatiens omeiana, Arisaema candidissima, and Uvularia grandiflora. Cyclamen hederifolium and the common snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis) are also dotted throughout. The glades surrounding the bog garden have recently been planted with tree ferns (Dicksonia antarctica) and the white-stemmed Himalayan birch (Betula utilis jacquemontii ’Snow Queen’). A naturally styled children’s play area can also be found at the far end of the valley.
