The Heather Garden was once the home of Mr Simpson’s fine cactus and succulent collection, until the war years saw its demise.
Many thousands of heathers, both winter and summer flowering, have been planted amongst the rocky outcrops, giving year-round colour. A small collection of plants from the Southern Hemisphere enjoys the warm climate on a sunny bank as you leave the heather garden. These include the spectacular spring-flowering Acacia pravissima and Sophora Sun King (‘Hislop’). Winter-flowering Grevillea ‘Canberra Gem’ and G. victoriae also feature. Recent additions include species of Cytisus and Genista to provide vibrant touches, and ornamental grasses such as Miscanthus, Cortaderia, and Stipa gigantea give a sense of height and movement throughout the winter.
